A recent successful application of artificial intelligence (AI) to the detection of foreign objects and debris (FOD) has demonstrated how AI mechanisms are likely to accelerate manufacturing, inspection and process improvement in the aerospace and defense industries. By replacing painstaking hand-engineering of manufacturing and inspection applications with AI-based development, these industries will more quickly benefit from development and implementation of automation and smart manufacturing technologies. An overview of this AI application will be provided along with details on the implications for all aspects of a product’s lifecycle — design, simulation, manufacturing, inspection and traceability. Quality documentation that automatically populates the digital thread is the basis for teaching a deep learning system to detect and improve its own ability to recognize flaws and characteristics of interest to all stakeholders in the product lifecycle.
