Almost all components and the final assembled aerospace and defense assets require coatings. To supplement the bulk properties of metallic and composite materials such as mechanical strengths and physical properties; coatings are needed to provide surface related properties such as protection and functionality. Corrosion protection, reflectivity, thermal barrier, radar transparency and signature are among the most important coating functionalities.
Smart and responsive coatings such as self-healing, fatigue and degradation sensing, anti-icing, etc. will be discussed. Novel multi-functional coatings not only provide conventional functions, they can also detect and report certain breaches and structural integrity compromises and repair the damage, thereby extending the service life of a component or the structure.
We will report types and functionalities of commercially available novel coating materials specifically used for aerospace, satellites, and military assets. Additionally, the trends in design and products’ functionalities will be discussed.
