Why Is It Important?
As metal additive manufacturing becomes accepted as a mainstream production technique, the relatively slow printing rates of some machines becomes a significant barrier to adoption. Slow printing rates not only mean higher cost of production, but if the print time extends to many days or even weeks, the chance of process interruption, and thus a scrapped part, increases significantly. To address these challenges, machine manufacturers have added more, higher-power lasers to their machines, which in some cases can provide up to a 10X print-speed increase over legacy equipment.
