Why Detroit?

The Home of Innovation and Invention

Detroit, celebrated as the epicenter of industrial innovation and manufacturing excellence, proudly hosts AeroDef Manufacturing 2025. As the Motor City and Arsenal of Democracy, it is the perfect backdrop to explore the future of aerospace and defense technologies. It is our pleasure to share the rich history of Detroit and our best tips to consider before you travel.

Detroit’s Industrial History:

Detroit, the birthplace of the automotive revolution and the historic Arsenal of Democracy, remains a powerhouse of innovation. With its unmatched engineering expertise, highly skilled workforce, and robust supply chain, the city continues to lead advancements that define the future of manufacturing and mobility.

Manufacturing and Automotive: Detroit’s legacy of innovation and reputation for resilience, it is no surprise that the city is a leading influence in advanced manufacturing - particularly in automotive. Industry giants like GM, Ford, Stellantis, Rivian, American Axle, Magna, and Toyota continue to drive technological adoption that transforms the future of manufacturing. The city is also home to many Tier 1 suppliers and tech companies that support OEM innovation.

Arsenal of Democracy: Detroit, famously known as the "Arsenal of Democracy," was pivotal in the Allied victory during World War II. Its manufacturing strength allowed the transformation of auto plants to production hubs for tanks, planes, and weapons - supplying 25% of Allied war materials. Iconic efforts included Ford’s Willow Run plant producing a B-24 bomber every hour, and Chrysler’s tank factory created half of the U.S. tanks. Detroit's workforce, including women, African Americans, and newcomers from southern states, united to support the war effort. Today, the metro Detroit area is shaped by the presence of TACOM, CDLS, and BAE, all of which continue to play a lasting role in industrial manufacturing and social development.

Where Location Meets Strategy

Detroit was founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine La Mothe Cadillac, who saw the potential of its location along the narrow waterway between Lake Erie and Lake Huron, making it perfect for trade. Over the years, the city grew into a bustling trade center, benefiting from its unique position at the crossroads of the U.S. and Canada. This strategic location has played a big role in shaping Detroit into a key hub for industries like automotive, defense, and healthcare - driving cross-border trade and economic growth.
